What is Voiding Dysfunction?

Voiding dysfunction encompasses a range of irregularities in bladder or urination function stemming from various conditions affecting urine storage, transfer from bladder to urethra or kidney to bladder, or discharge. It involves inconsistent coordination within the urinary tract between the bladder muscle and the urethra, leading to incomplete relaxation or overactivity of the pelvic floor muscles during urination (voiding). This can result in unintended urination (while coughing or laughing), frequent urination, infrequent urination, or painful urination. However, JOGO's DTx therapeutics offer effective therapies for voiding dysfunction, helping individuals regain control and improve urinary function for a better quality of life.

Causes of Voiding Dysfunction

Issues with voiding often stem from either overactive or relaxed pelvic floor muscles. Additionally, nerve-related abnormalities or malfunctions may contribute to voiding dysfunction, potentially leading to irregular bladder contractions. Other factors, such as blockages within the urethra, the presence of cancerous or benign tumours in the bladder, and bladder stones, can also play a role.

Furthermore, overactive bladder muscles may exacerbate the condition, particularly if bladder muscle contractions overpower the actions of the sphincter muscles in the urethra. In men, voiding issues may be attributed to conditions such as an enlarged prostate or prostatitis, which involves inflammation, tenderness, or swelling of the prostate.

Complications Caused by Voiding Dysfunction

Voiding dysfunction encompasses a wide range of disorders stemming from various anatomical (related to body structure) and neurological(related to nervous system) factors. These disorders affect the urinary system, leading to conditions such as:
Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence refers to the inability to control urine flow and can manifest in four main types: stress urinary incontinence, mixed urinary incontinence, overflow incontinence, and urge incontinence.

Overactive bladder

Overactive bladder is a common condition that typically develops later in life. It involves the sensation or urge to void without stimulation from a full bladder. Various factors, including hormonal and neurological issues, can cause this.

Non-obstructive urinary retention

This condition is characterised by the inability to fully empty the bladder without an obstruction in the urinary channel. It is often caused by underlying bladder weakness and may manifest as a weak urinary stream during urination.

Treatment Options for Voiding Dysfunction

There is a comprehensive array of treatment options designed to restore control over your body. Our dedicated team assists you in making informed decisions about the optimal voiding dysfunction treatment suited to your needs.
Pelvic Floor Therapy

If your symptoms do not stem from a separate bladder issue like a tumour, treatment for voiding dysfunction may include pelvic floor therapy. This approach strengthens the pelvic muscles, focusing particularly on those surrounding the prostate or uterus and the large intestines.

Behavioural Treatment

We offer multiple strategies for managing voiding dysfunction. These include kegel exercises, biofeedback (which employs sensors to monitor body responses), timed voiding, and bladder training—all tailored to suit individual needs by our specialists.

Neuromodulation Therapy

Neuromodulation therapy is a non-invasive method that employs electrodes to stimulate nerves via the skin's surface, effectively blocking pain signals. The electrical waveforms penetrate tissue and muscles, reaching superficial nerves to produce therapeutic effects.

Lifestyle Modifications

Proactively engaging in pelvic floor muscle exercises can reduce the risk of voiding dysfunction. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits such as regular hydration, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding overly acidic foods also contribute to optimal urinary system function.

JOGO’s Voiding Dysfunction Treatment Plan

JOGO Health, utilizes cutting-edge Digital EMG-based biofeedback, a non-invasive and effective approach for voiding dysfunction treatment. Our sophisticated sensors detect muscle activity, allowing patients to view these signals as live graphs on a tablet or computer. A specialist meticulously tailors each treatment plan to meet the unique needs of every client.

Frequently Asked Questions on Voiding Dysfunction Treatment

What distinguishes neurogenic from non-neurogenic voiding dysfunction?

Neurogenic voiding dysfunction, often referred to as neurogenic bladder, is a disorder of the nervous system where issues with the brain, spinal cord, or nerves compromise bladder control.

Non-neurogenic voiding dysfunction does not stem from neurological causes. It typically involves a weakened bladder muscle, an obstruction in urinary flow, or learned behavioural habits affecting bladder function over time.

How does JOGO address voiding dysfunction?

At JOGO, we treat voiding dysfunction with Digital Therapeutics (DTx) assisted Pelvic Floor Muscle Training (PFMT). JOGO treatment does not have any side effects or complications. It is created with clinically-proven EMG Biofeedback, which has been researched for many years to treat the condition in men and women. The biofeedback device measures the strength of muscles and the muscle tone using either external electrodes or vaginal or rectal probes. A screen displays when and how your muscles contract or relax. The feedback can be used for therapeutic training and to measure your progress. JOGO Therapy program comprises 1 hr sessions per week for ten weeks. You can choose from direct or online sessions JOGO's Digital Clinic provides through certified pelvic floor therapists. Patients also receive a JOGO kit that's shipped home for teletherapy.

In what ways can voiding dysfunction be diagnosed?

At the initial consultation, our specialists conduct a thorough review of the patient's medical history and a physical examination. Female patients undergo a pelvic exam, while male patients are evaluated for prostate-related issues, including enlargement.

Diagnostic tests for voiding dysfunction may include:

  • Urinalysis to detect urinary tract infections
  • Blood tests for detecting high prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in men
  • Cystoscopy to inspect the bladder
  • Ultrasound to measure residual urine post-urination and pinpoint voiding problems
  • Urodynamic tests to evaluate bladder capacity and the functionality of the urethra, bladder, and pelvic muscles

What symptoms are associated with voiding dysfunction?

Voiding dysfunction can manifest in individuals of any gender with symptoms such as:

  • A sudden, urgent need to urinate
  • Urinary incontinence (leakage)
  • Difficulty fully emptying the bladder
  • Frequent urination
